From Loss to Purpose
Lock Arms for Life was founded from a mother’s desire to help prevent other families from experiencing the loss that changed ours forever.
In 2009, my oldest son, Jon, died in a handgun accident while attending college. In the years that followed, I searched for ways to honor his memory, understand what had happened, and find meaning in a tragedy that forever changed our family.
As part of that journey, I wrote At Close Range, a memoir published by Texas Tech University Press in 2020. The book explores the loss of Jon, the complexities of grief, and my efforts to better understand the role firearms played in our lives. Coming from a family of gun owners, I sought a path beyond politics and blame — one focused on gun safety, responsible ownership, and practical solutions that could help prevent similar tragedies.
As I became involved in firearm safety efforts, I quickly realized there were few organizations focused on educating middle school students, high school students, college-aged young adults, and their families. Most existing programs were designed for parents of young children or elementary-aged students. Yet Jon’s story highlighted the need for conversations and education that continue through adolescence and young adulthood. Recognizing that gap, I founded Lock Arms for Life in 2018.Recognizing that gap, I founded Lock Arms for Life in 2018.
What began as a personal mission has grown into a nonprofit firearm safety organization focused on prevention, education, and community partnerships. Today, we work with families, schools, healthcare providers, law enforcement agencies, and community organizations throughout Texas and beyond. Through grant funding, donations, and partnerships, we provide safe storage education, training programs, free gun locks, and educational resources designed to help prevent injuries, unauthorized access, suicide, and gun theft.
Our organization has received support from the City of Austin Office of Violence Prevention and collaborates with partners across the healthcare, education, and public safety sectors, including Cook Children’s Aim for Safety program. While much of our work is centered in Central Texas, our educational resources and safety materials have reached communities throughout the country.
At Lock Arms for Life, we believe that small actions can save lives. A conversation, a gun lock, or a safe storage device can make all the difference. Every family we reach honors Jon’s memory and advances our mission to create safer homes and communities through responsible firearm storage.
Remembering Jon
Jonathan “Jon” Ross was born on October 29, 1985. He was a beloved son, brother, artist, writer, gamer, and music lover whose creativity and imagination touched everyone who knew him.
Quiet by nature and somewhat shy, Jon had a deep curiosity about the world around him. He loved reading and could often be found immersed in books long before fantasy literature became mainstream. His favorites included J.R.R. Tolkien, George R.R. Martin, David Gemmell, the Redwall series, mythology, Beowulf, Hamlet, Star Wars novels, and countless other adventures. He dreamed of one day visiting Greece because of his fascination with ancient myths and legends.
Jon was also a gifted writer and artist. He filled notebooks with poetry, short stories, sketches, and ideas. Words came naturally to him, and his family often joked that he knew vocabulary no one else had ever heard of—especially during Scrabble games.
Like many young people, Jon loved video games. We had our share of parent-child disagreements over the amount of time he spent playing EverQuest, StarCraft, Zelda, and other games he enjoyed. Looking back, those ordinary moments are memories I cherish. They remind me that Jon was more than a tragedy—he was a young man with dreams, talents, passions, and a future ahead of him.
In 2009, while attending college, Jon died in a preventable handgun accident. His loss forever changed our family and inspired a journey that would eventually lead to the creation of Lock Arms for Life.
Today, Jon’s legacy lives on through the organization’s mission to promote responsible firearm storage and prevent injuries through education, awareness, and practical safety solutions. Every gun lock distributed, every family reached, and every conversation about safe storage honors the life of a young man whose story continues to inspire positive change.
While we cannot change the past, we can work together to create safer homes and communities for future generations. That is the legacy Jon leaves behind.
