Remembering Jon

Jonathan “Jon” Ross was born on October 29, 1985. He was a beloved son, brother, artist, writer, gamer, and music lover whose creativity and imagination touched everyone who knew him.

Quiet by nature and somewhat shy, Jon had a deep curiosity about the world around him. He loved reading and could often be found immersed in books long before fantasy literature became mainstream. His favorites included J.R.R. Tolkien, George R.R. Martin, David Gemmell, the Redwall series, mythology, Beowulf, Hamlet, Star Wars novels, and countless other adventures. He dreamed of one day visiting Greece because of his fascination with ancient myths and legends.

Jon was also a gifted writer and artist. He filled notebooks with poetry, short stories, sketches, and ideas. Words came naturally to him, and his family often joked that he knew vocabulary no one else had ever heard of—especially during Scrabble games.

Like many young people, Jon loved video games. We had our share of parent-child disagreements over the amount of time he spent playing EverQuest, StarCraft, Zelda, and other games he enjoyed. Looking back, those ordinary moments are memories I cherish. They remind me that Jon was more than a tragedy—he was a young man with dreams, talents, passions, and a future ahead of him.

In 2009, while attending college, Jon died in a preventable handgun accident. His loss forever changed our family and inspired a journey that would eventually lead to the creation of Lock Arms for Life.

Today, Jon’s legacy lives on through the organization’s mission to promote responsible firearm storage and prevent injuries through education, awareness, and practical safety solutions. Every gun lock distributed, every family reached, and every conversation about safe storage honors the life of a young man whose story continues to inspire positive change.

While we cannot change the past, we can work together to create safer homes and communities for future generations. That is the legacy Jon leaves behind.
